United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources
Goal 14 is about making people aware of the importance of the ocean and how important it is to protect it. Why do you think the ocean is so important?

Here are some questions to help stimulate your thinking about this Goal:
  • What are the major challenges facing the oceans and seas today?
  • What are considered the greatest polluters of the ocean and seas?
  • How do these polluters impact various marine species and biomes?
  • What projects are in place to try and reverse the impact of pollution in oceans and seas?
  • What are some of the biggest causes of declining fish populations in oceans around the world?
  • How are fish species in oceans / rivers monitored / counted?
  • What projects have increased fish stocks in the ocean?
  • What are some examples of programs / initiatives / inventions that have had a positive impact on reversing the contamination of oceans and seas?
  • What can you do every day at home to help reduce our negative impact on the oceans and waterways?
  • What is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch? Where is it and how has it been created?
  • What is being done to try and reduce the size of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?
  • What are microplastics and why are they such a major issue for marine species? Give examples that you have found in your research.
